Our knowledge of railway optical issues is unparalleled in

the UK, and has been applied to a wide range of

issues including:

  • Research into train head lamps optical performance (RSSB Project T530)
  • Optimisation of close- and long-range viewing of signals (RSSB Project T683)
  • Support to rail accident investigators in connection with the Ladbroke Grove accident, the Halkirk, Wraysholm and Beech Hill level crossing accidents, and the recent Bayles and Wylies crossing accident
  • Optimisation of the design of visors for level crossing road traffic signals (‘wig-wags’)
  • Hard coatings for plastic signal lenses
  • Assessment  of the lighting performance at railway stations using on-train video cameras and monitors for Driver-only Operation, DOO(P) lighting at train depots and power signal box control rooms
  • Train cab instrument lighting
